Maternity Reflexology

As a Midwife and Clinical Reflexologist, I also specialise in Maternity Reflexology. I trained with the amazing Jenni Tribe who is part of the well-established and respected Susanne Enzer School of Maternity Reflexology.

Reflexology is a natural therapy which is completely safe and effective during pregnancy. Many of the disharmonies and disorders that may occur during a woman's fertile life respond well to reflexology.

Research proves that women who receive regular reflexology during pregnancy have better pregnancies and have shorter labours with less intervention and require less pain relief.

Pregnancy is known to cause the body to go through significant changes that effects the pregnant woman emotionally, hormonally, psychologically and the physiological balance of the body. Although it is an exciting time, pregnancy can sometimes present challenges whilst the body adjusts and learns to cope with the changes.

Reflexology can be a great support for relieving stress and tension; evoking deep relaxation and creating a sense of well-being. Consultations are carried out at every appointment with Helen, maternity reflexologist and midwife.

Preconception

When planning to start a family it is important for both parents to optimise their health, not only physically but mentally and spiritually. Although it is usually the 'mum to be' that considers coming for reflexology, it is also important for the partner to consider treatments too.

You may suffer with hormonal imbalances, irregular periods, have PCOS, painful and heavy periods, endometriosis or fibroids etc - reflexology can help to calm, soothe, reduce pain & inflammation and works wonderfully at regulating cycles.

Subfertility

If you are struggling to conceive yet there is no physical reason why you shouldn't be able to then the qualities of reflexology are excellent for creating a balanced mind, body and spirit - the best environment for a baby to be conceived.

Assisted Conception

The distress of being unable to conceive naturally and feeling so preoccupied with trying to conceive can become overwhelming as well as physically exhausting from the IVF programmes. The balancing, calming qualities of reflexology help enormously to compliment the medical procedures.

It is advised reflexology treatments are discontinued during the period when taking Clomid or any other fertility drugs. On completion reflexology treatments can be resumed.

Antenatal Sessions

Maternity reflexology can help alleviate symptoms arising from the following conditions:

  • Constipation & Haemorrhoids, Heartburn, indigestion and acid reflux
  • Emotional disturbances and mood swings
  • Fatigue & Insomnia
  • Nausea and morning sickness
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Breech presentations
  • Pelvic Girdle Pain/ SPD
  • Sciatica, Back pain and general aches and pains
  • Ligament and groin pain
  • Cystitis
  • Oedema
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Low energy levels
  • Sinus congestion

Preparing the body for labour

Providing mother and baby are healthy, maternity reflexology can be used to help prepare for labour. Although it is not claimed that reflexology can induce labour, a priming technique stimulates specific reflexology reflex zones with the intention of creating a boost of energy to encourage the onset of labour contractions. This technique is more effective when the mother has regular reflexology sessions throughout the pregnancy. It is believed to be helpful in the final few weeks and days when stress and anxiety levels often rise.

Stress hormones may delay the onset of labour so the more prepared and relaxed you feel, the better. Treatments change slightly as the due date approaches and we focus more on encouraging the birthing process to commence by stimulating the body to produce oxytocin, encouraging contractions causing the cervix to dilate and loosening of the pelvis.

Postnatal essions

The balancing, harmonising and restoring qualities of maternity reflexology helps bring about balance and returns the body back to the non-pregnant state.

Regular sessions of maternity reflexology during the postnatal period may be beneficial to alleviate symptoms of common postnatal problems such as:

  • Engorged breasts
  • Stimulate lactation
  • Urine retention
  • Constipation
  • Backache
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Postnatal depression
  • Induce sleep
  • Increase energy levels

Reflexology is not recommended if the pregnancy is affected by pre-eclampsia, placenta previa (grade 3 or 4), any vaginal blood loss or Deep vein thrombosis.
